Expo Valerie (Tropical Winter) was a private exhibition of artist Valerie Stahl von Stromberg, having invited friends, artists she has met in Cologne, Berlin, London and Shanghai, places she has lived in recently and lives in. The art work shown here was chosen by her and the artists as a sort of extensive conversation or exchange, making up something like a collected memory.

Presented in a private house in Shanghai, China, the singular artworks stand alone, but might enter in a sort of new dialogue without that all of their story might be revealed. Expo Valerie opened as a private view at Xinle Road, as an invitation.

The singular artworks may also be seen as annotations to very different bodies of works of the different artists. This may be seen as well in the different use of media, from sketches, documents, drawings, to time based art works and sculpture.
The setting of the exhibition, in a private house, also added to the nature of the exhibition as a collection that exists more in the perception of artist Valerie Stahl von Stromberg, than in a curatorial approach, as can be seen in most group shows. Therefore the emphasis of the exhibition lies not in the notion of the "new" or the "actual", but in the ongoing process an artist is involved in, to constantly create a discourse between the own artwork and that of others.
Bringing this discourse to Shanghai is a private attempt turned public, that might enroll into a further discussion. (AM)
